Matthew Goetz is a doctoral candidate studying early American history under his advisor Denver Brunsman. Matthew's dissertation examines the impact that the Barbary Wars had on American racial politics. He has published articles for the George Washington Digital Encyclopedia, the White House Historical Association's website, and Commonplace: the Journal of Early American Life. Matthew was born and raised in California, earned a master's degree in American history from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has been at GW since 2018.
