Peter F. Klaren specializes in the socio-political history of twentieth century Latin America, particularly Peru and the Andean region. The recipient of post-doctoral fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the American Philosophical Society, he was the co-founder and convener of the GW University Seminar on Andean Culture and Politics (1986-1991) and recipient of the 1995 Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Teaching Prize at GWU. During the 2007-08 academic year, he served as Visiting Professor of History at the University of California in Irvine. Professor Klaren has also taught at Washington State University, Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and Georgetown University. He also consults occasionally with the US Department of State on matters concerning Peru. His new book is a Historical Dictionary of Peru from Roman and Littlefield, 2017. Additionally, in 2017 Professor Klarén was awarded the Orden del Sol del Perú by the Peruvian government, the highest honor bestowed by the nation, in recognition of his scholarship on the history and politics of Peru.
