Zionism and Its Discontents
This year's Max Ticktin Lecture in Israel Studies will be given by Dr. Susie Linfield (NYU), speaking on "Zionism and Its Discontents."
From its inception, Zionism was a fiercely controversial movement—opposed not only by the Arab world but also, until the 1940s, by most Jews. Zionism has always incorporated two competing aims: to “normalize” the Jewish condition, and to be a model state for others. This talk by Dr. Susie Linfield, author of the recent acclaimed book, The Lion’s Den: Zionism and the Left from Hannah Arendt to Noam Chomsky, will explore some of the ways in which those contradictions played themselves out historically—and how they still underlie many of the debates over Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today.
