Andrew M. Smith II

Dr. Andrew M. Smith II is an Associate Professor of History and Classics at The George Washington University. He specializes in the history and archaeology of the ancient Near East, with a primary interest in the study of Arabia in the Classical Periods. His research is on local and regional power dynamics (economic and social), and the transitional processes that affected personal and group identity in the Nabataean and Palmyrene worlds, as reflected in his book Roman Palmyra: Identity, Community, and State Formation (Oxford 2014). Since 1993, Smith has both directed and participated in many epigraphic, archaeological, and cultural heritage projects in Greece, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.
