Paula Alonso is a historian of the politics and society of nineteenth and twentieth century Latin America. Her research combines the arena of institutions, citizenship, and electoral processes, the world of print culture, and political thought. She is the author of Between Revolution and the Ballot Box. The Origins of the Argentine Radical Party in the 1890s (CUP, 2000); Jardines secretos, legitimaciones públicas. El Partido Autonomista Nacional y la política argentina de fin del siglo XIX, (Edhasa, 2010); (editor) Construcciones impresas. Panfletos, diarios y revistas en la formación de los estados nacionales en América Latina, 1820-1920, (FCE, 2003); (co-editor) El sistema federal Argentino a fin de siglo XIX. Debates y Coyunturas, (Edhasa, 2015), and has published in the Hispanic American Historical Review and the Journal of Latin American Studies, among other journals. She is completing a book-length history of Argentina to be published by Cambridge University Press and working on a research project on the history of democracy in South America and the Atlantic world, 1860-1930.

Professor Alonso developed her academic career in the UK and Argentina before moving to the United States. Her research has been supported by the Leverhulme Trust, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Stiftung, the CONICET, Fundación Antorchas, and by residential fellowships at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Maryland; the Kellogg Institute at the University of Notre Dame, and the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies. She is also an elected US resident fellow of Argentina’s National Academy of History, and a member of the Editorial Board of The Americas. Professor Alonso teaches graduate and undergraduate courses and seminars on Latin America and World History.
