Jisoo M. Kim is Korea Foundation associate professor of history, international affairs, and East Asian languages and literatures at George Washington University. She specializes in gender, sexuality, law, justice, emotions, and affect in Korean history. Kim penned the award-winning book The Emotions of Justice: Gender, Status, and Legal Performance in Chosŏn Korea (University of Washington Press, 2015; Korean translation, Nermer Books, 2020). She is the editor of “Paradoxes of Gender Politics: The Power Dynamics of Gender, Status, and the State in Late Chosŏn Korea” (Special Issue 30.2, 2025, Journal of Korean Studies) and Emotions, Affect, and Narrative in Korean History and Culture (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2026). She is also the co-editor, with William Haboush, of The Great East Asian War of 1592 and the Birth of the Korean Nation (Columbia University Press, 2016). Currently, her book manuscript, Paradoxes of Regulating Sex: Marriage, Adultery Law, and Sexual Citizenship in South Korea, is under advanced contract with Cornell University Press. This research was supported by the Harvard Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship (2024–25). She is the former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Korean Studies (2019–25), the founding director of the GW Institute for Korean Studies (2017–24), and the founding co-director of the East Asia National Resource Center (2018–24). In 2023, she received a Distinguished Research Award from the Ministry of Education in South Korea. She received her M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Columbia University.
